Green Theatre Collective, Season 2012, will be presenting William Shakespeare's great romance

The Tempest on the South Fork of Long Island this summer.

Sylvester Manor, Shelter Island, NY
July 14 and 15, 2012

Quail Hill Farm, Amagansett, NY
July 18 - 22, 2012

The Tempest is a play about  Duke Prospero, a powerful magician, and his young daughter who are shipwrecked on a remote island by his enemies.  His enemies unwittingly have come within the reach of his magic, and will be shipwrecked themselves. The Tempest is a tale of revenge, redemption, betray and greed, as well as innocent love and selfless generosity.

Laughter, mystery and magic will be told by six actors with music, dance, daring and passion - don't miss it!

"While many may spend the summer of 2012 waiting for the end of the world, those on the South Fork might remember it instead as the beginning of a renaissance in outdoor Shakespearean theater…

Hal Fickett, the founder of the collective, was introduced to the South Fork last year when he took his group to Quail Hill for two nights in September to perform “As You Like It.” He was there at the invitation of Scott Chaskey, the farm’s director, after he saw the group perform at Sylvester Manor on Shelter Island in July.

Quail Hill’s apple orchard will be the theater’s home base this summer, and members plan to present “The Tempest” there from July 18 to 22. The group will return to Sylvester Manor as well, from July 13 to 15.

The company earned enthusiastic praise for its 2011 performances, particularly for the minimal presentation of the plays, which are done without stage, lighting, or period costumes."

The Sag Harbor Express

The Sag Harbor Express
Shakespeare in the Raw
By Annette Hinkle

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players” — so wrote William Shakespeare in “As You Like It,” his pastoral comedy of love and mistaken identity in the forest primeval. But while the Bard was probably thinking of the world as a theatrical place in the rhetorical sense, the Green Theatre Collective is taking that phrase to a whole new level.

And it’s doing so right here on the East End.

For Green Theatre Collective (GTC), all the world literally is the stage — one where fields and orchards provide the backdrop and the fly space is nothing more than the blue sky overhead."

"What could be better than circling the fruitful fields of Sylvester Manor’s Community Supported Agriculture farm to arrive at the windmill, sitting on the verdant grass, and in this idyllic, mid-summer setting watching a beautiful production of Shakespeare’s great pastoral comedy performed by talented and idealistic actors of the Green Theatre Collective?

Nothing could be better."

The Green, Eco and Sustainable in Green Theatre Collective

“The “Green” in their title is not someone’s name; it’s part of their mission to make theatrical production environmentally friendly, to use up as few unsustainable resources as they can. This means taking a “minimalist” approach to theater, the most radical feature of which is: no stage…They also employ no sets, no artificial light, vestigial costumes, and only seven actors for a play whose Dramatis Personae specifies 26 speaking parts.”
